It is important to support the transition from school to college or work in the most practical way possible.  As with the Bungalow provision, our main aim is to help our students to become as independent as possible. A relaxed, friendly atmosphere puts students at their ease.

All students have individual timetables that allow them to follow their interests as well as their individual needs. Students work towards an OCR Diploma in Life and Living skills (Entry 2-3) as well as other suitable functional skills qualifications such as Functional Skills English and Maths at levels 1 and 2 for those who are able and Food Hygiene certification. Our curriculum is interesting and enthuses the students to question, problem solve and challenge.

Students are out and about in the community as much as possible, using their knowledge and building the skills needed to be independent adults. Work related learning forms a large part of many students’ timetable. Independence is an integral part of every session including break and lunch times. We use local sport and leisure facilities in order to support our students to use these after they leave Westfield. We have been seen playing pool in a local pub at lunch time with students buying their own drinks (non-alcoholic) and socialising with each other. Everything we do is to help make life as pleasant and non-threatening as possible in adult life.

We are fortunate to have an office space at Dorset Council’s County Hall in Dorchester. This is used by a group of students who are ready to take the next step into the work of work but who need support and guidance to achieve this. Our students continue to gain qualifications in Maths and English and take part in a range of work experience opportunities.
