Teaching in the Early Years classroom is centred on the seven areas of learning and development in the EYFS curriculum. These are:

• communication and language
• physical development
• personal, social and emotional development
• literacy
• mathematics
• understanding the world
• expressive arts and design

The learning environment reflects a combination of the best practice in autism and in play-based learning – with the balance altered according to the specific needs of each child.

Activities are planned to develop pupils learning through class topics and individual pupil interests. The class staff are supported by speech and language therapists, physiotherapists and occupational therapists to ensure that each pupil can access activities and develop good communication skills.
