On Saturday, Susie Jeffcott, our Head of Sixth Form, will be travelling to Malawi, where she will officially start our school link with Chimbota Private Secondary School, set up through the British Council.
Malawi is one of the ten poorest countries, the people are known to be some of the friendliest in the world. The government pays for all students to go to primary school but most students wanting to study further must pay. Chimbota is in the North of Malawi in the Nkhata Bay region. The school was set up as a result of lobbying by villagers as the nearest secondary school was a two hour walk away.
Susie is taking with her a bag full of footballs and netballs, books and dice. The teaching in Chimbota is very much chalk and talk and the director of the school has asked that we show staff how to teach in a more interactive way.
Westfield and Chimbota schools will be working on projects related to the Global Goals for Sustainable Development, these global goals are a set of 17 commitments made by 193 world leaders, to end extreme poverty, inequality and climate change by 2030.
Chimbota School are planting crops and trees at the moment and we have also just planted 220 trees to create a Jubilee woodland, therefore we intend to start work on Goal 15 Life on Land, Goal 2 Zero Hunger and then Goal 3 Good Health and wellbeing.
Susie will keep in touch over the next three weeks and we will plan some activities for our students so that we can understand the importance of sustainable development.
